OOTD - 8.2.16

Hey guys,
I'm really loving shirts and ripped jeans at the minute so I thought I would share my outfit of the day because it incorporated both. My jeans are actually mens jeans, weird, I know, but I actually prefer them to women's jeans. I went into Topshop and the only sizes they had for women's jeans were tiny, I thought I was int he petite bit at first. I'd seen some ripped jeans in Topman so I figured I'd just try them on instead because they at least had my size and lo and behold they're my new pair of favourite jeans. Plus, they have huge pockets. Huge. I know guys jeans always have huge pockets but if I put my phone in my pocket I have to put my full arm in to get it out... Well maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration... Next time you're shopping for jeans you should definitely try out the mens jeans. I love the fit of these and they're the exact style I wanted!

Primark has a really good selection of shirts at the minute and being a bit busty I normally struggle with finding shirts but I don't have any problems with the ones I bought. I think they're really cute and fit really well so if they come out with more patterns or colours I may have to treat myself and pick some up.

Book Review: Beowulf

Hey guys,
For my first week back at Uni I had to read Seamus Heaney's translation of Beowulf so I thought I would do a review for it as I enjoyed it so much. I must admit that even though I study Literature, I don't really enjoy the stereotypical literary texts. I find them boring and dull, I much prefer my young adult supernatural books. The main part I like about studying Literature is the nerdy side, the analysing and researching. I love to research the books even if I don't enjoy reading them. Yet, I was pleasantly surprised when I found that I actually really enjoyed Beowulf.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Beowulf, it's an Anglo-Saxon epic about the warrior, Beowulf and his three fights with the monsters Grendal, Grendal's mother and finally a dragon at the end of his life. I must admit that I think the reason I enjoyed it so much was because I was looking at it from a Literature students point of view. I loved the use of imagery to contrast the darkness surrounding the monsters and the light coming from the places and characters that represented good. I thought that the religious imagery present at certain points really added something to the poem despite it sometimes being a little more hidden. I liked how it jumps forwards fifty years so we can see how Beowulf's courage changes from being justified, to being foolish and is what ultimately leads to his death. It made for a thoroughly enjoyable read.

The poems account of a heroic society and how important reputation is, is extremely interesting as at some parts it may seem as though Beowulf is simply bragging yet that is just how things were in their culture. The representation of masculinity is also intriguing in that we see how heroism and loyalty are held above all else and we see different levels of this within the characters. The role of women is also interesting as well as the portrayal of monsters, as Grendal's mother is justified in revenging her son however because she is a monstrous beast of a female, she is demonised for it and killed.

Beowulf is a fast paced poem, filled with action that reflects life during the dark ages. I honestly couldn't put it down, it was extremely engaging and interesting. Atmosphere was built easily and you could really imagine what was going on and you believed in the character, Beowulf. I would really recommend this to anyone who's looking for some light reading. It's a well told story of a warrior's world that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Let me know if you've read it and what you thought, or if you're going to read it!

OOTD - 1.2.16

Hey guys,
Today's my first day back at uni and I have to admit it feels pretty strange. I haven't had any seminars or lectures since before Christmas but it's nice to finally be getting back into a routine. I thought I'd do a quick outfit of the day before I headed out for my first lecture of the year, for Drama... How am I going to cope, I have no idea how to act! Oh well, at least I'll be comfortable whilst I fail.

Home Spa Day

Hey guys,
Everyone tells you that your first year of Uni is easier than your a-levels, but that doesn't mean it's without stress. I handed in two essays on Monday and Tuesday so I think I'm definitely in need of a Spa Day, except a more student friendly at home one. After all, I don't have the money to be going and getting facials. So here's my perfect at home spa day, so put on some comfy clothes and here we go!

Music
Just like everyone else in my generation I love music. Now my favourite style of music tends to be sad music, I know, how depressing. After watching the Fault In Our Stars I went home and downloaded the soundtrack because it was my kind of music. Yet, I don't find the music that depressing, instead I find it calming. Perfect for a spa day. Here's a list of some of my current favourites!

Ghost - Halsey
If I Could Fly - One Direction
Just My Soul Responding - Amber Run
Sacrifice - Zella Day
Fire Meet Gasoline - Sia

Hair Masks
I ombre-d my hair at the beginning of summer so it definitely needs a lot more care now. For my perfect spa day I put a hair mask on, plait my hair and then leave it in for a few hours whilst I do the rest of my spa day routine. I especially love the Bleach London Reincarnation Mask

I know some people love to change up their hair colour when they have a spa day, using it to give them a confidence boost. If you're thinking of changing your hair but aren't sure which colour to try then I suggest trying Madison Reed's Hair Colour Quiz it's quick, easy and the colour it matched me with, Lucca Light Brown (7NGV), is perfect!

Face Masks
I feel like a spa day isn't complete without a face mask, to me, they're the ultimate symbol of relaxation. I love putting on a face mask whilst I'm watching something, and taking it off always makes my skin feel amazing! My favourites are the Tea Tree one from The Body Shop and the Cupcake one from Lush. The Cupcake one smells amazing and works really well!

Books vs Movies
I do a Literature degree so I think it's safe to say I love reading, and on a spa day there's nothing better than curling up with a book and some sweets, but sometimes I want to watch a movie as well, especially if I'm painting my nails. I thought I'd give you a list of some of my favourite books and movies to help you try and decide.

Movies

  • 21 Jump Street
  • 13 Going On 30
  • Pitch Perfect
  • Easy A
Books
  • The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins
  • Northern Lights - Philip Pullman
  • Inkheart - Cornelia Funke
  • Angelfall - Susan Ee

I hope you found this useful and you should definitely check out some of things I mentioned when you're planning your own spa day. Invite some friends round and make it even more fun, there's nothing better than chilling with your friends when you're in need of a relaxation day!

University Room

Hey guys,
I know, I know, long time no see, but I promise I'm back now. I've had such a busy summer that I didn't have a chance to blog. Now that I've settled into uni life though that's about to change and I'll hopefully be putting up a blog a week!

I got my a-levels back and did way better than I expected!

  • English Literature - A
  • History - A
  • English Language - B
  • Extended Project Qualification - A
Which thankfully meant I was able to get into Newcastle University. Now obviously my first post about uni life has to be a room tour! I don;t know about you but I love looking at people's uni rooms and seeing how they've decorated them. I didn't have a chance to see the accommodation before I picked so I was just hoping it would be nice. Luckily I wasn't disappointed. I absolutely love it. There's way more room than I expected and with the high ceilings it makes it look even bigger!

So without further ado, here's the photo's!

So that's my room, I hope you found that interesting. I think I'm going to be doing a series of posts on study tips so if you're interested then stay tuned!

Are any of you at Uni? If so what are you studying or if you're planning on going to Uni then what do you want to study?

MIA

Hey guys,
Sorry that I've been MIA for the past month! I've just been so busy with college that this has had to take a back seat. I've had so many deadlines, but once I've gotten majority of my coursework out of the way, I promise I'll be back!
